3 Tips for Healthy Holiday Feasting

Ho ho ho..the holidays! Get-togethers, parties, potlucks and presents…and, so much food! Some of us feel a sense of forboding about over-eating, heartburn and seasonal weight gain. Yet with so many events and not particularly health supporting treats on offer, how does one keep it all in check?

It may seem our only options are to avoid over eating altogether by not attending events, or exercising great personal self control and discipline when we are at them. However, we may also develop a successful strategy for managing our intake. Here are three tips from whole foods personal chef and caterer, Chef Laura Moore:

Tip #1: EAT WELL before attending: plan for a nourishing snack or light meal in the hour or so before an event, and show up already well nourished. You will be much less likely to over eat, and more in control of making better choices if you are not starving hungry.
Suggestions: a large bowl of steams greens with organic butter or Earth Balance, and hemp hearts is an easy meal, and chock full of nutrition. Or a bowl of miso broth with a little ginger, buckwheat soba noodles, snap peas, sea veg and green onions. Both warming and highly nutritious!

Tip #2: BE SELECTIVE; choose only a few items at each event, minimizing the burden on your digestive system. When we put a wide variety of different foods into our stomach, we  burden it with the difficult task of digesting smaller amounts of many different foods. Protease to digest protein, lipase to digest lipids, amylase to digest starches, lactase for dairy products. That’s a lot of work, and often mixing these enzymes will cancel out each others effectiveness. Suggestions: stick to green salads and proteins together, don’t mix raw fruits in with your meal.

Tip #3: DISAPPEAR DIGESTIVE DISTRESS; you do choose to indulge, use digestive enzymes to help your system handle the variety of foods. Ask for full spectrum digestive enzymes at your local health food store: take one tablet at start of event, another halfway through, and feel the magic as that extra digestive support disappears digestive distress.
