3 Tips for Healthy Holiday Feasting

Ho ho ho..the holidays! Get-togethers, parties, potlucks and presents…and, so much food! Some of us feel a sense of forboding about over-eating, heartburn and seasonal weight gain. Yet with so many events and not particularly health supporting treats on offer, how does one keep it all in check?

It may seem our only options are to avoid over eating altogether by not attending events, or exercising great personal self control and discipline when we are at them. However, we may also develop a successful strategy for managing our intake. Here are three tips from whole foods personal chef and caterer, Chef Laura Moore:

Tip #1: EAT WELL before attending: plan for a nourishing snack or light meal in the hour or so before an event, and show up already well nourished. You will be much less likely to over eat, and more in control of making better choices if you are not starving hungry.
Suggestions: a large bowl of steams greens with organic butter or Earth Balance, and hemp hearts is an easy meal, and chock full of nutrition. Or a bowl of miso broth with a little ginger, buckwheat soba noodles, snap peas, sea veg and green onions. Both warming and highly nutritious!

Tip #2: BE SELECTIVE; choose only a few items at each event, minimizing the burden on your digestive system. When we put a wide variety of different foods into our stomach, we  burden it with the difficult task of digesting smaller amounts of many different foods. Protease to digest protein, lipase to digest lipids, amylase to digest starches, lactase for dairy products. That’s a lot of work, and often mixing these enzymes will cancel out each others effectiveness. Suggestions: stick to green salads and proteins together, don’t mix raw fruits in with your meal.

Tip #3: DISAPPEAR DIGESTIVE DISTRESS; you do choose to indulge, use digestive enzymes to help your system handle the variety of foods. Ask for full spectrum digestive enzymes at your local health food store: take one tablet at start of event, another halfway through, and feel the magic as that extra digestive support disappears digestive distress.

Lifestyle Markets offers a selection of full spectrum enzymes in their Supplements department. They also carry Hangover Relief which is an enzyme tablet that helps digest and metabolize alcohol, thus reduce or prevent hangovers. Available in small pack of two, or a full bottle for those of us who know they really like to indulge ~ you know who you are! Call 250.384.3388 or drop into one of their stores, and ask one of their friendly staff about these products! Lifestyle Markets

As the end of my maternity leave grew closer, I worried how my family would cope with my going back to work. I was plagued by \'what\'s for dinner?\' anxiety, and wondered how I would be able to spend quality time with my son while trying to cook dinner every day. Chef Laura\'s services were exactly what we needed to ease this transition. A well-stocked freezer of lovingly prepared, delicious and nutritious food put my mind at ease that at the end of the day my family would always be well fed.”

As a busy individual with a lot on the go, I appreciated how quickly Chef Laura was able to accommodate my cooking request - within a week of contacting her I had a fridge and freezer full of ready-to-eat food. Laura worked to develop a menu plan that addressed both my vegan dietary choice and individual food preferences. While all the dishes were delicious, the kichadi is beyond amazing, and I will be requesting it again! Laura provided a fantastic timely service that delivered excellent vegan food, great convenience and flexibility, and a tidy kitchen to boot.”

Chef Laura came to our home to prepare meals on a weekly basis, fresh groceries in hand. We had specific dietary requirements: primarily salt free, low fat, low sugar, high fiber and vegetarian. Laura met these criteria unfailingly, and yet was consistently able to produce extraordinary & exciting flavors in her many varied creations. Laura did all the shopping for her ingredients and clearly had exceptional knowledge about nutrition & wholesome quality products.”
